I've got something fun in store for the next review, but because today I've got the low-calorie blues we're instead going to taste out my booze equivalent of junk food: pomace brandy, particularly in the form of distilled Gewurztraminer leftovers. This is a category that's been all over the place for me, from the sort of "meh" Nusbaumer (   • Pomace O'Clock: Inga Grappa di Dolcet...   ) to the really good Clear Creek (   • Clear Creek Week, I: Pinot Grigio Gra...   ) and Schlumberger (   • No-Notes Marc Sample Roundup: Chamill...   ) to the totally wowzers Metté (   • Intro to Marc 2: Cordelier, Metté, Du...   )... not to mention mention the glorious madness that sometimes escapes from Zind-Humbrecht (   • A Zind-Humbrecht Trio: Marc de Gewürz...   ). Today it's a bottle from the Gilbert Miclo distillery in southern Alsace, a very interesting little distillery that also makes whiskies, vodkas, and gins along with the usual imposing variety of brandies. Let's get to it:

G. Miclo Eau de Vie de Marc d'Alsace Gewürztraminer Grande Réserve (Lapoutroie, Alsace; bottled circa 2021; 45% ABV), 82/100

It's lovely and the aromatics are bonkers - this is a Gewurz marc, after all - but it's also quite short in the mouth and just a hair syrupy. Exactly the kind of thing I'd want with a good pipe after stuffing myself with baeckeoffe, of course, but for me it's a little bit 🤷 for the style.
