Mount Assiniboine is considered the Matterhorn of the Rockies due to its triangular shape similar to the Matterhorn of the Alps. It is located in the Great Divide of British Columbia / Alberta Border.

This is a popular backpacking destination and booking a campsite could be challenging, so advanced planning is required. We were lucky enough to book the campsites we wanted and here I am.. excited to share this epic adventure with you. You will know why this is a much-coveted hiking destination.

I did this backpaking trek with ten of my hiking friends in July 2021. We did a thru-hike starting from Sunshine Village Ski Resort ending at Mt. Shark Trailhead. Here's our itinerary with the chapters from the video:

0:00 Intro
1:07 Day 1: Sunshine Village Ski Resort to Porcupine Campground
Hiking distance is 19.5 km which includes 6.5 km* from Sunshine Ski Resort Parking
Lot to Sunshine Village due to gondola not running in 2021. Porcupine
Campground is a free first-come-first served campsite. It has an outhouse, bear
cache, and a central cooking area.
There is a running creek nearby (This is in mid-July. It could dry-out later in the
summer)
If the gondola is running, you may save this 6.5 km by taking the gondola from the parking lot to Sunshine Village.

5:39 Day 2: Porcupine Campground to Magog Lake Campground.
Hiking distance is 16 km. Magog Lake Campground could be reserved via the B.C.
Parks Discovery camping website. It has a semi-enclosed and an open cooking shelter, tap water, several bear caches and outhouses. It is close to Mt. Assiniboine Lodge which
offers afternoon tea, cold drinks, and cake (!) to non-guests on certain days. This is also the base for several hiking trails in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park such as the Niblet, the Nub, Windy Ridge to name a few. The reason why we booked three nights here.
It is also close to several pristine lakes such as Magog, Sunburst, Cerulean and Elizabeth lakes. A refreshing swim at the end of a hike is always a treat!

10:56 Day 3: Highlights of our Day Hike to Niblet, Nublet, Nub and various lakes loop
Hiking Distance: 12 km
Elevation Gain: 683 m.

14:37 Day 5: Magog Lake to BR - 14 McBride Campground Via the Wonder Pass
Hiking Distance: 15 km
McBride Campsite could be reserved via the Parks Canada website. It has only ten
pads, it has an outhouse, and a bear cache. The nearest water source (in mid-July)
is the Bryant Creek which is along the way when you hike-in.

19:35 Day 6: McBride Campground to Mt. Shark Trailhead
Hiking Distance: 13.6 km
We booked the White Mountain Adventures shuttle van to drive us back to Sunshine
Village Parking Lot where we left our cars. The drive out from Mt. Shark
Trailhead is on Kananaskis Road which is a gravel road.
