Helldivers 2 has taken the internet by storm. It hit 400,000 concurrent players in a game that is a sequel to the game that maxed out in its almost 9 years of existence at 6,000 on Steam. There are many factors that have caused this to happen. From the game itself being fun to play, the core gameplay loop being addictive and enjoyable through to the goofy tone and community-driven feeling. That’s not all though. A year and a half ago I asked the question “is gaming dying or are we entering a new age” a video that caused a lot of conversation in the comments and I believe the last year in gaming and Helldivers 2 in particular has proven that we have entered a new time in gaming. Today I want to spend some time discussing the state of modern shooters and how they played a role in this games come up, How the hell Divers 2 is fun to play, and why exactly that is. I’ll also talk about the future of this game, the issues I could see coming but also the possible rise to becoming a staple in gaming.
