If you are a beginner knife thrower this video should help you when you first start throwing knives. The most frustrating part is when it doesn't stick-- but after you learn the "science" of knife throwing (in that the knife completes a half spin that is about 3 - 4 times the length of the knife) it becomes much easier. This tutorial should also help you gauge your full spin distance ranging from small knives (6 inches) to large knives (14 inches). Good luck!

By the way, I have modified my "pinch grip" into what I think of now is a "pencil grip"-- I started doing this naturally because of how heavy long knives can be. You can pinch the knives at a different angle (in which the knife is perpendicular to the ground rather than parallel), but I believe If I pinch it so the knife rests in the web of skin between my thumb and index finger, it'll keep me more consistent with my throws (which I need to work on). Notably, most knife throwers, as far as I know, don't throw using my "pencil grip" but usually so that the knife is perpendicular to the ground before their release.

There are other grips to try. For example, you can throw using the "hammer grip" which I know John Bailey uses (that's holding the knife like a hammer), or holding your thumb along the spine, which was recommended to me by Joe Darrah (maker of the knives I throw in this video).

For a GREAT instructional DVD on knife throwing, check out Jack Dagger's website. He throws knives professionally; he also offers personal one-on-one knife throwing lessons!
