Although spikes are not as well known as throwing knives, I believe them to be one of the best projectiles for the beginner thrower, great for throwing indoors (less noise, less damage), and not to mention, a good quality spike will cost significantly less compared to a good quality knife. And, if the thrower doesn't have enough time to build a wood target, an archery target works great for spikes and are easily available. But a rubber mat target (which is very inexpensive), would also suffice.
