I have always tried to use live bait offshore. Sometimes it isn’t available, so I always carry some good quality frozen bait as a fall back. However, when fishing in the bay I haven’t been as conscientious. My father first took me fishing off Scarbrough jetty when I was 4, with sand worms (live) and prawns (dead). As I grew up, I graduated to boats, other baits and target species but always dead bait for the bay, livies offshore. About 15 years ago I started occasionally using live bait in the bay, but I didn’t put a lot of effort into finding it. If it wasn’t around, I didn’t spend time chasing it.

Recently a friend told me I should be concentrating on getting live bait before I even thought about fishing. He is quite right, offshore I do that, I guess mainly because I know where to go for bait when I am heading offshore. In the bay I didn’t know many spots, most that I did know were not near where I usually fished, I didn’t often load a Sabiki rod and didn’t want to waste time looking for bait when all I wanted was one or two reasonable fish to take home.

Anyway, I did take his advice, and I have been targeting live bait before I go fishing, even in the bay. I always knew what a difference that made when fishing offshore, so I don’t know why I didn’t connect the dots and do the same in the bay. Habit, I guess.

What I have to say here works just as well in the bay as it does offshore. Having good bait is 90% of catching good fish, the other 10% is finding the fish.
