Phobos, one of Mars' two moons, has a diameter of approximately 22.4 km, making it about half the size of Manhattan Island. This moon orbits Mars incredibly quickly, completing a full orbit in just about 7.6 hours. Positioned at an average distance of around 5,900 km from Mars, Phobos holds the title of the closest moon to a planet in our solar system. Its surface temperature averages around -43°C (-45°F), but it can plummet to -112°C (-170°F) during the night. Scientists believe Phobos is a captured asteroid, and its slowly decaying orbit suggests that it may eventually crash into Mars or break apart, potentially forming a ring around the planet."
