ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਕੋਇਲ ਨਾਲ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਗਾਇਕਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਹਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਦਾਦੀ ਜਾਂ ਨਾਨੀ ਵਰਗੀ ਲਗਦੀ ਹੈ। ਬੇਸ਼ੱਕ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਗਾਇਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਰਲ਼ਕੇ ਦੋਗਾਣੇ ਗਾਏ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਗੀਤ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੂਹ ਨਾਲ ਗਾਏ ਹਨ। ਅਸੀਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਗਾਇਕਾ ਵਜੋਂ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਜਨਾਂ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਗੀਤ ਵੀ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਕਰੀਬਨ 35 ਹਿੰਦੀ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਲੇਅ ਬੈਕ ਸਿੰਗਰ ਤੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਵੀ ਗਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਮਹਾਨ ਗਾਇਕਾ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਅਣਵੰਡੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਵਿਚ 25 ਨਵੰਬਰ 1929 ਨੂੰ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਦਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਹੋਇਆ। ਅਪਣੇ ਭੈਣ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਚੌਥੇ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੀ। ਮੁਹਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ, ਮਨਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ, ਤੇ ਨਰਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਗਾਇਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕੌਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਸੀ। ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਭੈਣ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਯਾਦ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਰਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਗਾਇਕੀ ਦੇ ਬਲ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਾਣ-ਸਨਮਾਨ ਮਿਲੇ। ਸੰਨ 2002 ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਡਾਕਟਰਰੇਟ ਦੀ ਆਨਰੇਰੀ ਡਿਗਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਸੰਨ 2000 ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਤੇ ਨਾਟਕ ਅਕੈਡਮੀ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਲਈ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ 1984 ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਐਵਾਰਡ, ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਚੱਤਰਵੇਂ ਜਨਮ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਸਨਮਾਨ, ਜਲੰਧਰ ਦੂਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਲਾਈਫ ਟਾਇਮ ਅਚੀਵਮੈਂਟ ਐਵਾਰਡ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਰਬ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਸੰਨ 29 ਮਾਰਚ 2006 ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਅਬਦੁਲ ਕਲਾਮ ਅਜ਼ਾਜ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਦਮ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਐਵਾਰਡ ਵੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
22 ਦਸੰਬਰ 2005 ਨੂੰ ਹਾਰਟ ਅਟੈਕ ਦਾ ਦੌਰਾ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਚਕੂਲਾ ਦੇ ਜਨਰਲ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਕਰਵਾਉਣਾ ਪਿਆ। ਸਿਹਤ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਰਾਬੀ ਸਦਕਾ 2006 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਲਾਜ ਲਈ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਕੋਲ ਜਾਣਾ ਪਿਆ। ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਊ ਜਰਸੀ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਲਾਜ ਲਈ ਦਾਖ਼ਲ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਮਹਾਂਨ ਗਾਇਕਾ ਨੇ 15 ਜੂਨ 2006 ਨੂੰ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਸਾਹ ਲਿਆ।

This legendary singer was born in Lahore, the capital of undivided Punjab, on 25 November 1929 to father Bishan Das and mother Maya Devi. Among her siblings, Surinder Kaur was in the fourth place. Apart from Muhinder Kaur, Manjit Kaur, and Narinder Kaur, famous Punjabi singer Prakash Kaur was older than them. Surinder Kaur shares a memory of her elder sister.
Surinder Kaur received many honors on the strength of her singing. In 2002, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar awarded him an honorary doctorate degree. In the year 2000, the Indian Music and Drama Academy honored him for Punjabi folk music. Apart from this, in 1984, the National Award was given by the Indian Sahitya Akademi, a special honor was given by the Punjab Department of Languages ​​on the occasion of the 75th birthday, the Lifetime Achievement Award was given by Jalandhar Doordarshan, and the entire family was honored by the Punjabi University Patiala in the All India Conference. On March 29, 2006, he was also given the Padma Shri award by the President of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam Azaj.
On 22 December 2005, he suffered a heart attack due to which he had to be admitted to the General Hospital in Panchkula. In 2006, due to ill health, she had to go to her daughters living in America for treatment. Where he was admitted to New Jersey Hospital for treatment. This great singer of Punjab breathed her last on 15 June 2006 in this hospital.
