Bolivian armed forces pulled back from the presidential palace in La Paz after President Luis Arce slammed a coup attempt against the government and called for international support. General Juan José Zúñiga, who had been recently removed from his position as commanding general of the Bolivian army, was arrested following the attempt.

Minister of government Eduardo del Castillo later said Zúñiga was seeking to court popular support and that the nine people injured in the coup attempt proved "this was not a drill".
