#1 MISTAKE players make on the SERVE! How to solve this and gain MAX power and spin on your serve

Which mistake is it? If you guessed the waiter's trey serve, you are absolutely correct. This is when the palm faces the sky and the racket is behind the hand. This is so common because when we first play, it makes sense to use this form for easy contact. In the beginning, we don't realize how restrictive this movement is. Players use this because they want to start playing matches before they are actually ready to do so, and it becomes a habit that is very difficult to break.

The real motion we need comes from the full arm with the elbow behind you. Check out our serve playlist for more serve lessons. The first step to achieve this advanced serve is using a neutral continental grip. Practice picking up tennis balls with this grip to start FEELING what it is like to use this grip. Bounce the ball and slice the side of the ball to also create more feel with this grip and feel what is like to slice the ball.

The fork in the road is committing to building this motion and missing serves vs keeping the waiter trey serve and making all your serves. Think of palm down and elbow back when you are serving to help develop this movement. There is no judgment where the ball is going so don't worry when you are serving. Also, film yourself when you are practicing.

If you are serving on a court, move up to the service line or go to the baseline and face the fence. You do NOT need to get every serve in the service box. Practice this and let us know how you did!
