About Placid Lassie:
Built in July 1943 in Long Beach, California by the Douglas Aircraft Company, the C-47 Placid Lassie (N74589) was delivered to the US Army Air Force with the military registration number 42-24064. In late 1943, she crossed the Atlantic to the UK and took part in several critical WWII operations:

Operation NEPTUNE (June 6, 1944) – Normandy Invasion
Operation MARKET GARDEN (September 17-25, 1944) – Netherlands
Operation REPULSE (December 23-25, 1944) – Relief of Bastogne
Operation VARSITY (March 23, 1945) – Rhine Crossing

After the war, she returned to the US in June 1945 and was flown to the Reconstruction Finance Company in Walnut Ridge, AR. Instead of being scrapped, she was saved by West Coast Airlines of Seattle to carry passengers and mail.

In 1969, Aero-Dyne Corp of Renton, VA purchased her for charters and maintenance until 1985. Then, Saber Cargo Airlines of Charlotte, SC operated her until 2003. Express Air Inc. of South Carolina acquired her in 1992, and in 2000, Dodson International Air added her to their fleet.

By 2010, she was restored by Clive Edwards and James Lyle for the 75th anniversary of the DC-3. Their goal: “No sleep ’til Oshkosh.” They succeeded, and the restored DC-3, named Union Jack Dak, flew to Oshkosh AirVenture.

Historical research later revealed her true identity as Placid Lassie, a D-Day veteran. In 2014, she flew to Normandy for the 70th D-Day anniversary, where her wartime history was rediscovered. Reuniting with her wartime crew and identity, Union Jack Dak became Placid Lassie once again.
