Currently, there is a shortage of desks. With supply chains disruptions from the pandemic and many people working from home, I’ve designed a desk that is easy to build. There are 5 pieces, joined with metal corner brackets and screws.

To make this project accessible to as many people as possible, the plans include detailed cutting instructions that you can bring to the store where you buy the sheet of plywood, and have them cut the plywood for you. Most big box and lumber yards offer wood cutting services. The design is optimized to only require 5 cuts. Once the plywood is cut into parts, the next step is to add iron-on wood edging called “edge banding”. This covers the edge of the plywood layers and gives the appearance that the plywood is a solid piece of wood. The edge banding has heat-activated glue on the back. You simply use a hot clothes iron and iron on the edge banding. Once the glue has cooled, trim the parts with an edge banding trimmer (see https://amzn.to/2RjpVnr ) and a sharp knife as shown in the video. The next step is sanding. Sand all the pieces smooth and slightly round the edges where the edge banding meets the corner edge of the plywood. Vacuum off all the parts to remove all the dust before applying the protecting finish on the wood. You can also use a tack cloth, which is sticky cheesecloth, to remove the small dust particles.

Now you’re ready to protect the wood with a finish. I recommend using a wipe-on polyurethane as it is easy to apply and forms a strong, durable finish that can take some abuse you expect on a desk. Follow the instructions on the container. You will likely need to apply 2-3 coats. I recommend 6 coats for the top to protect the wood where most of the wear and potential liquid from drinks could damage the top.

Once the finishing stage is complete, you can assemble the desk. The easiest way to do this is to assemble it upside down. The parts are connected together with metal corner brackets and 3/4 inch screws. Pilot holes need to be accurately drilled to line up the parts. Using a hinge bit (see https://amzn.to/3irmG9n ) is the fastest way to do this. Assemble the apron, back, and sides first, followed by the top.
