This story from the GDR once again illustrates the two-class society, which supposedly didn't exist. It's hard to imagine what it must have been like to drive on the highways of the GDR with your Trabant or Wartburg and suddenly see a BMW with GDR license plates in the rearview mirror.

We're talking about the E30 model, which was available in several variations such as convertible, sedan, or estate, and a total of 2.34 million units were manufactured in the Munich and Regensburg factories. Of these, only 80 units were sold as new cars through the Genex program in the GDR.

It's almost unbelievable how such a car was traded on the black market; reports suggest prices could reach 280,000 Marks.

For comparison: With that money, you could almost buy 4 single-family houses of type EW 58.
