hashtag#Radio5 yesterday to discuss the latest findings from the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) report https://lnkd.in/emdkeRPj
It shows that there are only 46 #maternalmentalhealth services operating across England and not all are able to adequately support those in need. There are NO services at all listed in Sussex where we are based.
Our peer-led Mothers Uncovered groups have saved lives but we receive no statutory funding and continually struggle to keep afloat, applying for dozens of grants in a year and largely being unsuccessful because of the fierce competition.
Peer-led voluntary sector services are vital to people's wellbeing, but they are forever the bridesmaid to the NHS. 1-2-1 therapy is vital in some instances, but it treats people in isolation. When the therapy ends, they still need to find their place in the community. Mothers crave a community that has seen them at their most vulnerable, shared experiences, validated each others' experiences and will support them going forward. Many of our participants are still in touch with women they met up to 16 years ago.
It is frustrating that we forever have to scrabble for tiny amounts of money, especially when there is no other provision!

'Mothers Uncovered saved me. There's no other way of putting it.'
It’s way past time that proper investment was made into peer-led initiatives. One of our 5 week groups costs £1500 to run, the cost of a hospital bed for ONE night.
