Welcome, or welcome back, to Wanderlust Walks! Thank you for being here.

Today we are exploring the gorgeous city, Oxford. Nestled within Oxfordshire, which is renowned for its beautiful countryside and landscapes, Oxford is perhaps one of the most picturesque cities within the UK. The city was named around 900AD, as a river crossing (also known as a "ford") for oxen -- it was later damaged, however, when William the Conqueror took over England during the 1066 invasion. The University of Oxford is roughly 922 years old, making it the second oldest University in the world. Oxford itself is a literary haven, boasting the highest concentration of published authors per square mile globally. Renowned figures such as J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings), Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland), C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia), and Mark Haddon (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) are all tied to this illustrious city. Aside from its inspiration for Hogwarts, Oxford’s Bodleian Library served as a filming location for several scenes in the Harry Potter films. It’s part of what gives the city its magical attraction! Oxford’s range of fantastic museums include the Ashmolean Museum, which was established in 1683, making it the world’s first university museum. It houses an extensive collection of art and archaeology, including works by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.
