Runway co-founder Anastasis Germanidis discussed how foundation models like Gen-3 Alpha are quickly making their way into Hollywood. He predicts that as the video generation software develops, it will give filmmakers the creative nudge to “try out ideas that they have low confidence will work.”

He emphasized that companies like Runway must be in constant conversation with artists to ensure their newest models best match the industry’s evolving needs. As filmmakers ruminate over how the camera moves and how characters interact, the company is simultaneously developing motion control tools.

Currently, he sees Runway’s Gen-2 model used most often during the storyboarding phase of production, but “as 3-D consistency improves, you’ll see more interactive work, such as using video content that simulates the experience of being on set.”

He predicts an “explosion of fiction films of all kinds” thanks to the new technology, but expects that it will take at least two years for filmmakers to release projects that use generative models as part of the production process.

“There’s not going to be an AI Oscars,” he quipped.
