Has music ever made you feel a certain way, think a certain way, or do something? That may seem like an obvious question if you’ve arrived at this video description, but it’s an important one to ask when writing music for advertisements, movies, or TV. In this video from the Berklee Online course, Songwriting Sync Success: The Art and Craft of Licensing, Film/TV, Advertising, and Production Music, instructor Bleu McAuley shares a memory from his childhood about how a song by Poison is still such an emotional attachment to the memory. The anecdote is lighthearted, but it’s not insignificant, because the same tools that are used in conventional composition styles can be applied when writing for advertisements and sync licensing, says Bleu, and the main focus in advertisements and sync licensing should be to engage with your desired audience. What message are you trying to send? Who are you trying to send this message to? How are you trying to make them feel? And so on. If you can write and record songs that make an audience feel or think a certain way (and especially prompt them to want to do something!), then you have the skills that advertisers and music supervisors for movies and TV are looking for!
