Grindr CEO George Arison said AI would propel the venerable hook-up app’s efforts to better serve a global community where 25% of the users were on the road at any given time, and were also increasingly interested in long-term relationships.

“Dating is a very limited geography,” he noted, which is a big issue especially in the gay community. “If we can break down barriers outside of your geography, that’s a lot richer…a massive opportunity to transform dating.”

The key, quite simply, is much better matching, with AI married to Grindr’s huge database, including 121 billion chats. But it has to be done in a way that guarantees privacy protections, a central concern for Grindr from early on.

He envisions a time when everyone will have their own AI persona: “I’ll have a synthetic, and you’ll have a synthetic, and they’ll talk to each other,” giving people far more information before they actually meet.
