It's a battle to end all camper van battles. Two of the most popular class b camper vans go head to head. Who will be crowded the winner?

The Winnebago Travato 59G was the first class b camper van in North America to be built on the Ram Promaster chassis. For years it was the top selling class b van because of its unique European layout and low price point. Then, Erwin Hymer entered the North American market and launched one of its best selling European models rebranded the Aktiv. The Aktiv quickly stole some of the limelight from the Travato and every year has seen the Aktiv continue the trend. Today, we're doing a head to head comparison between these two great camper vans but only one will be crowded the winner.

The Travato's strengths are its low price point, a large bathroom and it's pass through storage in the rear. The Aktiv's strengths are its permanent bedroom in the back; a garage with lots of storage; great energy options and an industry leading 6 year warranty and 2 years of standard roadside assistance.

The Travato opted to include a larger bathroom and to do so it had to take room out of the back of the van. This in turn cut the bedroom short and forces a smaller bed than the Aktiv. By moving the bathroom to the rear, it frees up a lot of space midsection in the van which allow the Travato to have a larger refrigerator and lots more kitchen storage.

The Aktiv opted to reduce the size of the bathroom (including putting in a flip up sink to save space). This allowed them to put the bathroom midsection in the van and open up the entire back of the van for a permanent bedroom/garage. Because the bathroom is not midsection the area where the refrigerator and microwave could do now need to move to the passenger side. This means there's a lot less storage space in the kitchen as compared to the Travato. But, there's enough storage including a large pantry.

Hymer and Winnebago chose to prioritize different things but in my book Hymer made the better choice. Having a larger bedroom that converts into a larger garage is more useful than having a larger bathroom and storage space in the kitchen. I don't need so much storage space in the kitchen. I could use more storage space in the garage. A large, comfortable bed for 2 is more important than a larger bathroom. But where Hymer clinches the deal is with its industry leading 6 year warranty and 2 years of roadside assistance. Even if Hymer opted to directly copy the Travato's layout, it would still win based on its 6 year warranty. Winnebago only offers a 1 year warranty on the Travato.

When you consider that both these camper vans will cost you about the same once you're done negotiating the Aktiv is the clear winner. It functions better as a camper van for a couple or a family and the peace of mind you get with its warranty just can't be beat.
