It's not often that I get really excited about an RV but I've made an exception for the 2019 Erwin Hymer Aktiv 2.0 Loft Edition. This van's not the highest quality; it's not the lowest priced but it is the most versatile. It's the only camper van on the market today that is a full height van with a pop top AND It's the only van on the market today that can seat 6 in 3-point seat belts and sleep 5. Because of this versatility the Aktiv 2.0 Loft Edition performs just as well as a couple's van, a family van or a touring coach.

The star feature of this van is of course the pop top loft. When the top is down the van is 4 inches shorter than the normal Aktiv 2.0 because the air conditioner is mounted under the van. To raise the loft you unhook 2 catches and push the top up. Gas struts help to support the heavy top but it still takes some strength to lift. Also, you have to perform a careful balancing act as you hold the top with both hands and walk up the ladder. Once the top is fully deployed you get a pretty spacious loft above the main cabin. There's a 70"x55.5" mattress up here supported by the Froli sleep system which I found to be adequately comfortable. The bed is large enough for 2 adults to sleep in. Zippered windows on each side and the front and an overhead skylight let plenty of light in during the day but at night you're going to need to bring a flashlight. There's no power or lights up in the loft. Also, there's no heating up there as well. You're going to have to bundle up on chilly nights.

Almost everything else in the Aktiv 2.0 Loft Edition is exactly the same as the regular Aktiv. You've got a front lounge with a jump seat that seats 2. When the cab seats swivel around 4 can sit in the lounge. With an additional mattress the front lounge converts to a third sleeping area large enough for an adult if curled up for kids.

There are no changes in the galley compared to the normal Aktiv and the bathroom is identical except that they've taken out the powered rooftop ventilation fan. This means that the loft's skylight is the only rooftop ventilation in the van. It's going to be a problem to have a wash down in the bathroom using hot water with the door closed. Hymer needs to add an opening window behind the sink like they have on the European model.

The layout I reviewed also has the rear sofa bed configuration. This is a great floor plan because it gives you an extra 2 3-pt seat belts and the flexibility to have a second lounge or a second dining area or a permanent bed setup. The bed itself isn't the most comfortable because Hymer doesn't use a lot of memory foam on the sofa and the ottomans don't use any at all. I'm going to give the Aktiv 2.0 Loft Edition a bit of a pass here since there are two other sleeping areas in this 21 foot van. The other big improvement that Hymer should consider is replacing the smallish rear windows in the lounge for larger, more panoramic ones like Pleasureway has on their Lexor models. The small windows on the Aktiv with permanent rear bed makes more sense since the bedroom never converts to a lounge and the bed is higher. But on the sofa bed configuration those windows just seem out of place.

My final recommendation on the Akitv 2.0 Loft Edition is to shortlist it. It is a great van that's highly flexible and comes in at a good price with an industry leading 6 year warranty. I'd recommend you run out and buy it if its cargo carrying capacity were larger than its stated 450lbs.
