A short explanation on how the transfer shift levers work on my '88 Mitsubishi Type 73 (J23), and a demo of high and low ratio driving. The transfer case is an interesting bit of legacy technology, but it's the heart of the 4x4 system on a jeep. I don't think Dana ever made another that drives both front and rear axles from the offset position, and that can be an advantage for ground clearance, and it allows for a power take-off as well.
