A stretched transfer case chain can be measured in a number of ways, You can usually hear it for one if there is enough stretch. By hearing it I mean that the chain will start rubbing on the case. You will also feel some slacked being pulled up under some heavy acceleration. Otherwise you can jack up the vehicle and plus some jack stands under it. Then rotate the driveshaft to see how much play there is.
