When Xabi Alonso joined Bayer Leverkusen a little over a year ago, the Bayer AG company club was languishing in the relegation zone, and looked to be at serious risk of getting relegated from the Bundesliga.

Now they lead the Bundesliga table, ahead of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, they are unbeaten, and they have the best record so far this season of any team in Europe's big five leagues.
