White sandy beaches, dreamy bays and turquoise lagoons - Halkidiki is also called the "Caribbean of Europe". Judith Rakers looks at the three fingers of the Kassandra peninsula, Sinthonia and Athos and finds that they offer a lot of variety, the vibrant metropolis of Thessaloniki is not far and the hinterland is considered Greece's green garden and good hiking area.

The three-finger peninsula of Halkidiki is located south-east of Thessaloniki in north-eastern Greece. Kassandra is the westernmost finger of Halkidiki. The peninsula is also the region's busiest and most touristy. In particular, the long, white beaches with turquoise waters and lined with green pine trees have made this area a tourist attraction. The expressway runs from the mainland to the middle of the peninsula.

Sithonia is the middle of the three fingers. The peninsula is more original and less touristy than its sister Kassandra. On the one hand, it is characterized by its Caribbean-style beaches with crystal-clear water. On the other hand, there is a lot of green nature that seems to be almost untouched in some places. Here you will find dense (pine) forests, olive groves and vineyards - and small mountain villages with a typical Greek flair.

The third finger is called Athos, named after the mountain (2,033 m). It is an orthodox monastic republic founded in 972. The almost 2,000 inhabitants are mainly monks. Male visitors are allowed to visit Athos as pilgrims - under strict conditions. Women are not allowed in and can only approach the peninsula by boat up to 500 meters.
