Beavers traditionally have had a big part in shaping the land in North America. I am doing some erosion control on my forest land and taking some lessons from beavers. I build some artificial beaver dams for erosion control in a seasonal stream. Natural beaver dams serve as erosion control by holding back sediment. Since beavers were eradicated from many areas, stream sediments are allowed to freely erode away down streams. Beaver dams also hold water on the land instead of allowing it to all quickly flow away. They provide habitat for fish and other wildlife. The ones I am building are very crude and won’t do much for habitat and holding water, but if we are lucky, they may hold back some sediment.
