Sejarah periode gempa bumi signifikan di Pulau Sumatera.

Sumatra Island is located between two tectonic plates, namely the Indo-Australian plate and the Eurasian plate. This plate extends from the Andaman Sea in the north of Sumatra to the sea in the south of Java, and ends around the Aru Sea. Meanwhile, the source of the second earthquake, the Sumatran Fault, was the earth's plate moving around the Bukit Barisan mountains from Aceh to Semangko Bay, Lampung. However, if the magnitude and depth are the same, as above 6 on the Richter Scale and shallow, the earthquake on the Sumatran Fault is at risk of being more destructive than an earthquake originating in a subduction zone. Research conducted by geologist Kerry Sieh since 1994 indicates that there is a potential for earthquakes with a magnitude of above 9 on the Richter Scale or megathrust in the Siberut segment, Mentawai Islands. An earthquake in a subduction zone, if the magnitude is large, is felt not to jolt, but to cradle.
