The finish is a very important and vital portion of the rowing stroke. Many rowers either pull in too high or too low at the finish, and misuse their arms and shoulders when bringing the handle to the body.

In this video, Rower Academy Coach and Olympian, Luke Walton discusses the dos and don’t of the finish of the rowing stroke. He speaks to the importance of brining the handle to the body at the top of the rib cage, base of the sternum. He emphasizes just how important it is to draw the elbows back past the body in order to activate and recruit the most muscles and generate the most power as you squeeze the handle to the body. And he reinforces how to focus on maintaining pressure on feet and handle across the entirety of the drive phase of the rowing stroke.

Once he teaches you the simple but important arms only motion, Coach Walton equips you with 2 drills to enhance your finish. 1) the Finish Pause and 2) the arms away pause. Both drills are great for helping rowers reinforce the most effective finishes.

The finish of the stroke is a very important, and often overlooked aspect of the rowing stroke. Focus on your finish to realize your fastest and most efficient rowing!
