Panel 1 — What is Being Young Like Today?

The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) will hold its annual flagship Singapore Perspectives (SP) conference, on 22 and 29 January 2024.

The theme of SP2024 will be “Youth”. Today’s young are coming of age in a period of unprecedented change on many fronts – socio-economic, technological, demographic, even the “nuclear family”. On the one hand, in many societies, including Singapore, the fastest growing segment is no longer the young but the old. On the other, youth itself is being prolonged, as the young today take longer than previous generations did to complete traditional milestones of adulthood, like formal education, stable employment, marriage and home ownership. SP2024 will examine the vast gamut of challenges facing young Singaporeans today, including: How will they fit into Singapore’s ageing society? How will they adapt to the evolving expectations around work? How will family norms change as more young people delay or reject marriage and parenthood altogether?

There will be a total of three online forums held on 22 January 2024, followed by an in-person conference on 29 January 2024.
