Between Valencia and Alicante you will find real Spanish joie de vivre - whether in the vibrant cities of the east coast, in the multifaceted hinterland or directly on the sunny Costa Blanca. Water sports are everywhere here: Tamina Kallert tries out an ultra-light packraft, a collapsible paddle boat, on the picturesque coast. València inspires with magnificent historic buildings, but also with spectacular avant-garde architecture in the "City of Arts and Sciences". The hinterland invites you to make discoveries away from mass tourism. Tamina Kallert learns how to prepare a classic Valencian paella and admires orange varieties that are over 100 years old on a plantation. She also takes a historic sailing boat through the canals in the Albufera Natural Park, home to Spain's largest freshwater lake. The region between València and Alicante is also an area steeped in history: two amateur divers discovered a shipwreck belonging to the Roman Emperor Nero here.

The area between Valencia and Alicante, also known as the Costa Blanca, has been shaped by different cultures and civilizations for thousands of years. The Iberians were the first to settle there, followed by the Romans who founded important cities such as València and Alicante in ancient times. During the Moorish rule in the Middle Ages, the region experienced a cultural heyday. The architecture of the epoch can still be seen today in many historic buildings and fortresses. In the 13th century, however, the Catholic Kings reconquered the region and introduced Christian rule. During this period many of the Moorish buildings were destroyed or rebuilt to suit Christian needs. The 18th century saw an economic boom when the city of Alicante became an important trading center for the production of wine, olive oil and textiles. In the 19th century the railway lines were built that connected the area to other parts of Spain. This boosted tourism, which then became an important economic factor after the war. Today, the area between València and Alicante is a popular destination for tourists who want to enjoy the sunny beaches, Mediterranean climate and rich cultural history.
