This is the seventh tutorial in a series that show how to convert a car game made for the Blender game engine so that it will play in a web browser (using Blend4web).

The original game consisted of a car driving into spinning gemstones to score points, avoiding obstacles that reduce health.

A number of tutorials, including this one, look at improving the appearance of the game.

This tutorial will look at giving materials matt and gloss finishes. It also add the ambient occlusion effect.

In the simple game, the car is driving around on a rough ‘dirt’ surface. Porous surfaces usually have a matt finish. To get this effect the specular intensity of the material is set to zero.

To give the ground a rough surface, a normal map is used which when rendered gives the surface bumps. The tutorial shows how to UV map the ground plan to the normal map and shows the settings for the texture.

The same procedure is used for the ramp and platform to give a concrete material. Smart UV Unwrap is used for the mapping.

To make the monkey statues appear glossy, as if they are made from shiny plastic or have been painted with gloss paint, the specular shader model is set to ‘WardIso’.

To use the ambient occlusion effect, the ground plane is made into a 3D mesh and the ramp and platform are set to receive shadows. Ambient occlusion is set on in Render properties.
