The full moon is the most powerful time of the month, according to many cultures. While many people would think that this is not true, actually there are studies that claim that a full moon can have an impact on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and even can affect our sleep!
Full moon and Physical Health
When a full moon is present in the sky, that means that the moon is close to the earth, which means that earth is affected with a higher gravitational force from the sky. This gravitational force impacts all water bodies on earth, so, you may see higher tides. But a research was done in 2013, to see if this high gravitational force can impact the blood in our bodies or not. They found out a lower blood pressure by 5 mm Hg, with also lower heart rates.
Full Moon and Menstrual Cycles:
Many women believe that there is a connection between their menstrual cycle and the full moon. But, that is not true. According to a research done in 2013 where they studied the participants over the course of a full year, there is no real connection between full moons, and menstrual cycles and fertility. A menstrual cycle can take between 21 and 35 days, it depends on age and hormones.
Full moon and Mental Health:
For a very long time, people had believed that full moons can make humans more violent and aggressive. However, a recent study investigated the data of 17,966 patient treated in psychiatric hospitals over 10 years. And they concluded that there is no effect for the full moon on human violence and aggression.
Things are a little different for bipolar disorder patients, as they may actually be impacted with full moons. A research done in 2018 claims that full moons cause a shift in bipolar patients from the depression symptoms to the mania symptoms.
Full moon and Sleep:
Sleep is also affected by full moons according to recent studies. A study done in 2021 claims that full moons can cause people to sleep less and take more time before failing asleep. According to another research, a full moon can have different effects on males compared to females. Males can have more sleep in the REM phase during a full moon, while females will actually have less REM sleep during a full moon.
