For focused and dedicated competition angler like Signature Tyer Devin Olsen, every pattern has a purpose. In this video he dives into some of his flies and the purpose that each one serves. He talks about things like fly design principals, where and when he first tied them, why, how they've evolved over the years and how he fishes them. There are some great tips on how to fish them, and how to find success with them. As we were filming, a strong baetis (BWO or Blue Winged Olive) hatch started to come off and he was able to demonstrate just how effective his perdigon patterns are—especially on large, discerning, wild trout.

Devin Olsen started fly fishing at age 9. He started competing at age 19 and made Fly Fishing Team USA when he was 21 years old. He has competed in 13 consecutive World Fly Fishing Championships with Fly Fishing Team USA. He has earned a bronze individual medal and silver and bronze team medals from these championships and numerous medals from competitions in the United States. In addition to his competition experience, he's the owner of Tactical Fly Fisher. He has also produced three instructional films Modern Nymphing: European Inspired Techniques, Modern Nymphing Elevated: Beyond the Basics, and Adaptive Fly Fishing. Finally, he is the author of the book Tactical Fly Fishing: Lessons Learned from Competition for All Anglers and the soon to be released Stillwater Fly Fishing: Competition Inspired Strategies for Everyday Anglers. Devin is a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we're honored to have him as one of our Signature Tyers.
