Vermont is one of our favorite destinations to escape from New York City and enjoy some of the best cycling in the Northeast USA. Every year for the Summer Solstice, we push ourselves to the limit and set out to cover the longest distance possible on our bikes. Some of the best cycling in the region can be discovered on Vermont gravel roads in the Green Mountains. Within Vermont’s unbeatable roads lies one of most notorious cycling routes in the USA: the Vermont Six Gaps Ride. The route encompasses nearly 140 miles of Vermont paved and gravel roads and ascends each of Vermont’s six mountain passes, known as Gaps. The Vermont Six Gaps include Brandon Gap, Middlebury Gap, Lincoln Gap, Appalachian Gap, Roxbury Gap, and Bethel Gap.

Vermont’s Lincoln Gap is considered to be the steepest paved mile in America, and is the highest paved road in Vermont. The ascent of Lincoln Gap totals 4 miles long at an average gradient of 7%, however the last 1.5 miles is an average gradient of 14% with multiple sections well over 20%. While the ascent of Lincoln Gap is paved, the descent features a very technical Vermont gravel road.

Our home base was located in Killington, Vermont and our route totaled a distance of approximately 170 miles. The route contained approximately 11 miles of Vermont gravel roads. The ride through Central Vermont’s Green Mountains took 11 hours to complete. The distance paired with the extreme elevation gain solidifies this as one of the most challenging cycling rides in the USA.
