Knot tying video tutorial. Learn how to make a Canadian jam knot. Easy step by step instructions for tying a Canadian jam knot in this simple guide.

The Canadian jam knot (or arbor knot if used in fishing) is knot #1114 in The Ashley Book of Knots (ABoK). It is composed of a simple noose with an overhand stopper knot on its end. The beauty of the knot is that it creates a rope pulley that gives a two to one mechanical advantage. This is what gives it its cinching power. The knot can be made either by tying a simple noose by pulling a bite through an overhand loop or it can be tied with the ropes end by tying an overhand knot around the standing part to make the noose. Ashley describes its use as a snare for catching birds and small game.

Uses:
As a snare trap for small game. Used in backpacking, hiking, bushcraft or camping as a cinching knot to compress sleeping bags, blanket rolls or sleeping mats. Can be used to tie up garbage bundles or compress foam. Can be used as a butchers knot to tie up meat. In fishing it is known as an arbor knot and is used to attach a fishing line to the arbor or fishing reel. It could be used as the loop knot to a yoyo in a similar fashion.

Advantages:
Very easy to learn and tie and fulfills its purpose well. Easy one to add to your arsenal of bushcraft skills.

Disadvantages:
After repeated use the stopper knot can become tight and hard to undo.
