New Naratif invites you to make your voice heard. Who should be the next PM of Singapore, and why?

10 February 2022 was Lee Hsien Loong’s 70th birthday, and his self-imposed deadline for handing over power to a new Prime Minister. Obviously he’s failed to meet that, and the 4th Generation of PAP leaders remain undecided about who should lead them. But why do a small group of undemocratically elected leaders get to decide Singapore’s next PM? The people of Singapore should decide.

Write in with your argument, in 500 words or fewer, to pingtjin.thum AT newnaratif.com, about who you think the next PM should be. You can propose anyone, from one of the usual suspects (Ong Ye Kung? Lawrence Wong? Chan Chun Sing?) to the people’s choice (Tharman) to something out of left field (Pritam Singh? Shanmugam?!? Yourself?). We’re not concerned with how likely the person is to become PM. We just want you to argue who the next PM should be. Focus on who you think is the best candidate and tell us why. All that matters is the quality and creativity of your argument.

New Naratif will pick five winners: the best argument for five different candidates for PM.

We’ll invite each of you to come on the Political Agenda podcast to make your argument. You’ll have 5 minutes to make their case, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A, and following that, we will have a public vote on who made the best argument. Not who should be PM, but who made the best argument.

The winner will get a free one-year New Naratif membership and an autographed copy of PJ Thum's next book, and will be invited back on the Political Agenda podcast to discuss the ongoing situation about the succession in Singapore and the next PM.

This is your chance to make your voice heard. Send an email to pingtjin.thum AT newnaratif.com by 12pm Singapore time on 1 March 2022!
