Charleston is the oldest and most populous city of the state of South Carolina in the United States of America (USA). It is a coastal city at the Atlantic Ocean. Charleston has a population of 150,000 and is slightly bigger than Columbia. The Charleston metropolitan area, including Dorchester and Berkeley, has 800,000 residents.

Charleston is one of the oldest cities of the US. It was founded in 1670 as Charles Town named after King Charles II but got it's present name since 1783. The seat of the government was eventually moved to Columbia to better serve the public needs of the population in the rural ares of South Carolina. Charleston is a southern state and played an important role in its history in the slave trade and had huge plantations. Charleston has a historic city market. A few river run through the city like the Ashley and the Cooper River.
