This is a song by an American singer-songwriter Norman Greenbaum and was released in late 1969. I
I don’t really know how to interpret this song, but there are a lot of references to Jesus and going up to the Spirit in the Sky when you die. This did cause some upset with Christians due to the line ‘Never been a sinner, never sinned’ but Greenbaum, who is Jewish, says that he just wrote the lyrics with no intention of offending anyone. I think that story is old now, and no one objects to it anymore. I guess that because he used ‘Jesus’ in the lyrics some people interpreted it as a Christian song.
Creating the, for then, distinctive guitar sound, Greenbaum used a ‘fuzz tone’ on his Fender Telecaster which someone he knew built and fitted into his guitar.
This is an iconic song that has been used in so many films, including Maid to Order, Apollo 13, Ocean’s Eleven, Suicide Squad. It was also used by Nike for a TV advert.
The song has been copied and released by
Doctor and the Medics in 1986, and by Gareth Gates, with the Kumars in 2003, and others. It has also been performed by the Kentucky Headhunters at Farm Aid in 1992, and used by Manchester United and Northern Ireland fans for support for one of their, now dead, footballers George Best using the altered lyrics of ‘I’m going to go on the piss with Georgie Best’
