「2023-2024 메모리얼 샤워」 ㅣ 「2023-2024 Memorial Shower」

특별 기획 「말의 바다」는 다섯 차례 넘실거리고, 끝으로 크게 뒤섞인다.

강정평화 활동가 최성희, 기후평화행진 기획자 엄문희, 월정리 해녀 김은아, 성산의 조류 관찰자 김예원, 채식과 동물권의 표현자 임지인. 이렇게 다섯 사람이 발언자가 되어 한 차례씩 장을 펼치고, 마지막에는 모여 함께 기류를 일으킨다. 두 시간 정도 되는 각 발언자마다의 시간은 이야기, 강의, 대화, 연극 등 저마다 다른 표현방식으로 전개된다. 그리고 모두가 모이는 마지막 날에는 서로의 논점을 받아안고 되돌려주며 문제의식이 난반사된다. 이 과정들은 작가 윤여일이 함께한다.

다섯 발언자는 공통 키워드인 ‘바다’를 포함해 저마다 열 가지 키워드를 정했다. 그 키워드들이 「말의 바다」 전시공간을 수놓는다. 그 키워드들과 더불어 여러 현장과 활동으로부터 사물들, 이미지들이 전시공간으로 모여든다. 월정의 태왁과 강정의 피켓이 만난다. 채식을 위한 그림책 곁으로 저어새가 날아간다. 1년 간의 기후평화행진 기록 사진이 이어진다. 「말의 바다」 는 그 공간의 이름이자 여섯 차례에 걸쳐 일어날 사건의 이름이다.

The Sea of Words, the special program of this exhibition, heaves and surges five times until they mix into a large entity. Five speakers—CHOI Seong-hee, a peace activist based in Gangjeong; EOM Mun-hee, one of the organizers of the March for Climate and Peace; KIM Eun-a, a haenyeo [female harvest diver] from Woljeong-ri; KIM Ye-won, a birdwatcher based in Seongsan; and IM Ji-in, a vegan and animal rights advocate—take turns to speak up, and at the end the event, they come together to release a stream of force. Each speaker is given approximately two hours to express themselves in different ways—through stories, lectures, conversations, and theatre. On the last day, when they all gather, each of them embraces and returns the points that the others have discussed, their awareness reflecting upon each other's. The writer YUN Yeo-il accompanies them throughout the process.

Each speaker chose ten keywords, including the designated common keyword "sea," which decorate the exhibition space of The Sea of Words. Along with the keywords, objects and images from different sites and activities flock into the exhibition space. A calabash buoy from Woljeong meets a handheld protest sign from Gangjeong; a blackfaced spoonbill flies by a picture book about veganism; a series of photos document the one-year March for Climate and Peace. The Sea of Words is not only the name of the space but also the name of the events that will take place over six occasions.
