You will be given drugs to make it easier and more comfortable to implant the tube, whether you are awake (conscious) or asleep (unconscious). You may also be given medication to help you relax.

A laryngoscope will be inserted to allow the provider to observe the vocal cords and top part of the windpipe.

A tube is then introduced into the windpipe, past the vocal chords, and just before the point where the trachea branches into the lungs if the treatment is being done to help with breathing. To help with breathing, the tube might be attached to a mechanical ventilator.
