York's humble beginnings as a sharpshooter and devout Christian in rural Tennessee belied the extraordinary heroism he would display on the battlefield. He achieved fame for single-handedly capturing 132 German soldiers and killing 25 others during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918, earning him the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States.
