The site of Jerah was founded in the Hellenistic period by the Seleucids, veterans of the army of Alexander the Great, masters of Syria, who, according to legend, would have named it Gerasa (city of the Gerontes). Subjected for a time to the pressure of the Nabataeans, then of the Jews, Gerasa will be reorganized thanks to the Roman conquest.
