The project leads for FutureDAMS deliver a lecture exploring: Addressing the water-energy-food-environment challenge

Following the completion of the interdisciplinary FutureDAMS project in early 2022, this lecture delivered by the project leads reflects on what they have learned through their research, capacity development and policy engagement over the last four and a half years. Are there any over-arching conclusions about major water/energy/food/ environment initiatives that can be agreed upon on, or does everything depend on ‘context’? And importantly, what does the future hold for these major nexus programmes?

FutureDAMS was an interdisciplinary programme, funded by UK Research and Innovation Economic and Social Research Council as part of the Global Challenges Research Fund, concluding in March 2022. The consortium worked to improve the planning and governance of integrated water-energy-food-environment (WEFE) systems. FutureDAMS developed a knowledge base, tools and an innovative approach to assist in the development of natural resource system interventions that have high social and economic value, despite uncertainties about the future. The research products were co-developed with partners in Myanmar, the Volta basin (West Africa), the Nile basin and East Africa, India and the Middle East.
