In the 1800s Irish people fled poverty and hunger to live in the slums of East End London. Here, the streets were a rabbit-warren of dark alleys and hidden courts flanked by lofty and decaying wooden houses into which crowded peddlers, costermongers and labourers, often more than one family to a room.
