U-T San Diego TV Article:
Among the highlights of Saturday's service was three patriotic songs, including "The Star-Spangled Banner," performed by 12-year-old tenor Sam Santiago of Irvine. Santiago's parents immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines 16 years ago.

The service concluded with the gift of hand-stitched lap quilts for each of the survivors. The quilts were made and donated by the nonprofit Quilts for Valor, which has given more than 106,000 to veterans over the years.

William Frymire, 89, of Post Falls, Idaho, came to the reunion with his 46-year-old daughter, Kim, who said her dad — who was a cook on the escort carrier USS Fanshaw Bay — is a different man when he’s among his fellow veterans and a grateful public.

“He’s not much of a talker, but when we come to these events he just comes alive,” she said. “For a lot of years, nobody ever said ‘thank you’ to these men and it means a lot to them now.”

Louise Kurtze, whose husband Donald was a third class boatswain’s mate on the Fanshaw Bay, said the battle’s survivors range in age from 89 to 96 and most are in failing health. Her husband is blind, and many others who arrived Saturday were in wheelchairs or using canes.

“It’s hard for many of us to get to these events,” said Kurtze, who lives with her 90-year-old husband in Bullhead City, Ariz., “but this is a family and getting together like this is what these men live for.”
