The 2023 Hugh Bunting Memorial Lecture was delivered at Reading University by Prof Zeremariam Fre. His lecture had the title "Working with Marginalised Communities in the Horn of Africa – Challenges and Opportunities for Inclusive Development".

Professor Fre has over thirty years experience as a practitioner with deep roots in advocacy and project development working with NGOs across 13 African countries. He is a graduate of Reading University and the founding director of the Pastoral and Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa - PENHA ( https//:www.penhanetwork.org ) and in 2018 received the prestigious Nelson Mandela Award as a Fellow for Global Reconciliation for his work in support of marginalised communities and grassroots organisations in Africa. He teaches two MSc modules about NGOs and Social Transformation and Urban and Peri-urban agriculture and Knowledge Systems in the Global South.

In his lecture he describes the history and livelihood systems in the Horn of Africa emphasising the importance of pastoralism for food security and environmental protection, and the role of indigenous knowledge systems in promoting people-centred sustainable development. He reflects on the positive and negative impacts of State policy interventions and the lessons that can be drawn.
