Excerpt from Trip Journal
4 July, 2024 Day 12
56 miles today, 685 Miles for the trip.
Eureka, MT to Whitefish, MT

Day started with some steep, short climbs out of Eureka. Had a good breakfast.

Met two young ladies on mountain bike exploring gravel trails around the area. They were also headed to Whitefish, but were taking a different route. I looked for them all day, but we never crossed paths again.

The road to Whitefish is on both back roads and major highways. I enjoyed the back roads despite the hills. The main highway was filled with speedy cars. Most would give you a lot of room. They must be used to cyclists by now.

Got to Whitefish and met Chuck and Rita. I camped in their back yard.

Went to dinner in Whitefish. What a busy little place. Took a long time to get my food but it was good.

After speaking with Chuck and Rita, I think I’m going to tackle Logan Pass. The plan is to do a short day tomorrow to a camp ground, take a rest day and hit the road early in the morning to get through before the traffic.

Was too tired to stay up for the fireworks.

5 July, 2024 Day 13
32 miles today, 717 Miles for the trip.
Whitefish, MT to West Glacier, MT

Had a really good sleep last night. Knew I had a short day so slept in, in the tent until 8:00am and left Chuck and Rita’s around 9:00a.

Had a savory crepe for breakfast. Stopped in the cycle shop for some gloves and set out for Glacier.

Although it was a short day, my legs felt every mile.

Took a couple of long breaks. Had a huge burrito at a roadside stand.

Was shocked when I entered West Glacier. Scenery went from alpine forest and highway to what looked like a little town plucked from Disneyworld.

Had to stop and get some ice cream and picked up some camping supplies.

Pressed on to the camp ground. Chuck made it sound like you can just show up and they’ll give you a place to stay. It wasn’t that easy but they were nice and I secured two nights stay for $16.00. Can’t beat that. Campground has bathrooms and showers.

Hiker-biker sites are shared. My site mate, Chris is traveling across the country by hitching and train. Weird, but interesting guy. He says there’s a Glacier shuttle that leaves in the morning at the visitors center near by. Might check it out on my day off tomorrow.
