In this video, we're talking about trekking with heart disease, specifically, coronary artery disease.

Mr. Karthik from Bangalore wrote to Dr. Sree with this question:

"Hey Dr. Sree I am 60 years old and I have had heart disease for 2 years. I have been wanting to do a Himalayan trek, but am not confident because of this. Can I go for it? I already walk 3-4 km daily as advised by my doctor. What else would you suggest for preparation?"

Firstly, coronary heart disease is a long-standing chronic condition, where the arteries that supply blood to the muscles of the heart develop small blockages or plaques. This causes a narrowing of the coronary arteries. Hence, the heart muscles are supplied with less oxygen, which leads to a strain on the heart, especially during exercise.

High cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes are all risk factors for developing coronary artery disease.

Once you have this condition, it can only be managed by a strict diet and regular exercise and medication if necessary; it cannot be cured. On radiological tests, 1-45% of occlusion of the artery is considered mild coronary artery disease. Anything above this is considered to be severe.

But can you trek with CHD?

Dr Sree explains.
