MeloAudio sent me their Midi Commander MIDI controller and expression pedal to check out, so I wanted to use them to show you how you can set up a MIDI guitar controller with an amp simulator.

My amp simulator of choice is TH-U (by Overloud) and setting up the midi switcher is super easy. The midi commander is plug and play, working immediately with my iMac (via a USB connection) without any other drivers required.

The expression pedal worked instantly with the midi commander and was easily recognised by TH-U. The only issue was that it didn't quite have the full 1-127 range so whammy pedal octaves weren't quite in tune. There was no issue though using it as a volume pedal or wah.

Setting up a guitar midi controller in Logic Pro X has caused me a lot of headaches over the years, but I've finally got it worked out and I'll show you the steps to follow to ensure that all your MIDI commands are recorded in your favourite DAW when you're recording.

The MeloAudio midi commander is a decent unit and would be particularly useful for users of Positive Grid amp sims (JamUP on iOS and their desktop sim, BIAS FX).

It's also a cheaper option for users of the Kemper profiling amp, AXE FX and Atomic units with its presets designed for each specific unit.
