Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Tumbles Out Of Box Office Top 5 In 2nd Week

At the box office, Kevin Costner's Western Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 isn't doing much better.

The Numbers reports that in its second Friday–Sunday weekend, the first installment of Costner's ambitious four-part tale earned an estimated $5.4 million at 3,334 cinemas, placing it sixth at the North American box office.

With a third-place finish, this weekend's total represents a roughly 50% decline in revenue from the movie's $11 million debut weekend.

Horizon has earned $22.1 million globally thus far. Sadly for Costner, only $455,610 of that total is from purchases of tickets abroad, meaning almost all of the movie's revenue will have to come from local ticket sales.

The Numbers places the first chapter of Horizon's budget at $50 million, providing clarification on the numerous reports of the film's production value. For instance, Variety said that the movie's production costs was $100 million before printing and advertising.

When evaluating the disparities in the budget reporting, it simply means that, given that the second movie is finished and slated for release in theaters on August 16, the $100 million might represent the total cost of Horizon chapters 1 and 2.

Costner Is Responsible For A Large Amount Of "Horizon"
Kevin Costner is mostly responsible for financing the Western epic, while Warner Bros. is merely distributing Horizon: An American Saga and has no significant financial interest in it.

According to Variety, Costner financed Horizon with $38 million of his own funds; the remaining production budget was provided by two private investors.

Furthermore, Variety mentioned that Costner and his investors paid the $30 million for P&A at Horizon.

There's still no word on whether Horizon: An American Saga's third and fourth chapters will ever be viewed. Production on the third movie has already started, according to statements made by Costner in interviews.

Horizon is a comprehensive story of the American West's expansion set during the Civil War. The plot is told from the perspectives of multiple characters in the first movie.

Along with Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Michael Rooker, Wase Chief, Abbey Lee, Jena Malone, Luke Wilson, and Danny Huston, Costner leads the massive ensemble cast of Horizon.

A few unfavorable reviews are compounding Horizon's problems. Horizon is still classified as "rotten" by Rotten Tomatoes, despite the fact that the critics' aggregate score increased from as low as 40% during its first weekend to 46% as of Sunday (based on 119 reviews).

Positively, Horizon has a 71% "fresh" Audience Score on RT based on more than 1,000 verified user ratings.

Viewers are treated to a sneak glimpse at Chapter 2 of Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1, which opens in theaters on August 16.
