If you're a fan of gaming then chances are that some of your favourite titles were made in Japan. I often find that the best way to experience Japanese games is to play them in their original language but obviously that comes with one huge stipulation... you need to know Japanese first! In this video, I'll run you through the basic terminology of gaming in Japanese and hopefully give you enough vocab to get started. Below is an entire list of the words and phrases featured in this video.

Start - 始め (はじめ) or スタート
Load - ロード
Continue - 続ける (つづける)
Settings - 設定 (せってい)
Options - オプション
Single player - 一人で (ひとりで)
Two-player - 二人で (ふたりで)
Multiplayer - みんなで
Online - インターネットで or オンライン
Local Connection - ローカル通信 (つうしん)
Loading - ロード中 (ちゅう)
Saving - セーブ中 (ちゅう)
Autosave - オートセーブ
Name - 名前 (なまえ)
Male - 男性 (だんせい)
Females - 女性 (じょせい)
Skin Colour - 肌の色 (はだのいろ)
Hair Style - 髪型 (かみがた)
Hair Colour - 髪の色 (かみのいろ) or 毛色 (けいろ)
Accessories - 装飾品 (そうしょくひん)
To Look around - 見回す (みまわす)
To Walk - 歩く (あるく)
To Run - 走る (はしる)
To Duck or crouch - しゃがむ
ToJump - ジャンプ
To Spin - 回す (まわす)
To Backflip - バック中 (バックちゅう)
To Swim - 泳ぐ (およぐ)
To Pick up - 持つ (もつ)
To Throw - 投げる (なげる)
To Equip or select - 選ぶ (えらぶ)
To Ride - 乗る (のる)
To get off - 降りる (おりる)
To Attack - 攻撃 (こうげき) する
To Aim - 狙う (ねらう)
To Shoot or Fire - 放つ (はなつ)
Replay - リープレイ
Quit - 止める (やめる)
Return - 戻る (もどる)

Music - 音楽 (おんがく)
Effects - 効果音 (こうかおん)
Environmental Effects - 環境音 (かんきょうおん)

Volume - 音量 (おんりょう)
Brightness - 明るさ (あかるさ)
Language - 言語 (げんご)
Audio Language - 音声言語 (おんせいげんご)
Subtitles - 字幕 (じまく)
Controller Vibration - 振動 (しんどう)
Items - アイテム
Sword - 剣 (けん)
Katana - 刀 (かたな)
Shield - 盾 (たて)
Bow - 弓 (ゆみ)
Arrow - 矢 (や)
Bow and Arrow - 弓矢 (ゆみや)
Amulet - お札 (おふだ)
Armor - 鎧・よろい
Ring - 指輪 (ゆびわ)
Potion - ポーション
